Game 2 of Lady Knights' quest to be live-streamed tonight
Robbinsville – If Tuesday's game is any indication, the Lady Knights are well on their way to a state finals appearance.
The dynasty of Robbinsville softball has never reached the 1A championship series, but has mowed down postseason opponents in its current quest for a ring.
Wins over River Mill Academy in the second round and Falls Lake Academy in the Elite 8 sent the Lady Knights into the Western Regional Series against Bethany Community School. The Lady Wolves have lost twice in playoff action with Robbinsville this season, falling in volleyball and basketball showdowns.
Things look even dimmer for the Summerfield program to salvage any success against the Lady Knights after Tuesday, which saw Robbinsville dispose of Bethany Community 11-1 at Judy Nichols Memorial Field.
The Knights broke through in the bottom of the second, when Sydney Adams singled to score courtesy runner Lexie Williams. Later in the frame, courtesy runner Loxley Burke – plus Adams and Anna Williams – each scored on wild pitches during the same at-bat.
In the home half of the third, Lexie Williams again dashed home on an errant pitch. Anna Williams replicated the feat once more in the fourth, before Daphne Barlow roped a hit to drive in Khaygen Buchanan.
Bethany Community School (No. 6, 18-6) scored the first postseason run against Robbinsville (No. 1, 24-2) in the fifth, when Mattie Southard connected to usher home Olivia Baker. The Knights replied with two more in the bottom half, when Ella Atwell singled to bring in Burke. Anna Williams scored on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat.
Robbinsville put the game in the bag in the sixth. Barlow came home on a wild pitch, before Myah Winfrey crossed the dish to cement the early victory.
Ella Nelms (19-0) only surrendered two hits and struck out 10 Lady Wolves. She surpassed 200 strikeouts for the year in the game and now has 202, while boasting an ERA of 0.14.
Game 2 of the Western Regional Final series will take place at 4:30 p.m., today, at Bethany Community School. A Robbinsville win will clinch the Western championship.
