Knights turn in strong performance at state championship
Greensboro – Though no gold was collected, Robbinsville still made a significant impact at Friday's 1A track & field state championship meet.
The Black Knights turned in a sixth-place team finish, tallying 33 points off the backs of placing sixth or higher in six different events held at North Carolina A&T University's Marcus T. Johnson Track, inside Aggie Stadium.
Pacing Robbinsville were All-State athletes Isiac Collins and Nathan Frederick, who both submitted second-place finishes in their respective shot put (51 feet, 9 ½" inches) and 800-meter run (1:59.64) competitions. Collins also claimed sixth in the discus throw, with his best launch measuring 144' 6".
Frederick was also a member of the All-State 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams, which set new school records in both events.
Colton McCoy, Austin Bohn, Xamuel Wachacha and Frederick reset the record they established earlier this season in the 4x800, taking fourth with a time of 8:19.48.
Cameron Allison ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay and along with McCoy, Bohn and Frederick, helped upend the previous school benchmark (3:30.20) – set by Brad Caldwell, Josh Davis, Trey Jones and Luke Perkins in 2008 – by completing the task in 3:29.30.
McCoy also finished sixth in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at the 50.33 mark.
The Lady Knights were represented at the jump pit, with Chloe Adams placing fifth in the long jump (17' ½") and Claire Barlow taking 12th in the triple jump (31' 4").
Corvian Community recorded 62 points to best second-place Carver (52 points) in the boys team-title race.
The Swain County Lady Devils (97 points) won the program's fifth-straight girls championship, besting second-place Corvian Community (75).
Prior to Friday, Robbinsville’s track & field program had not left Greensboro without crowning at least one state champion since the 2019 meet.
