Robbinsville’s set streak ends in Clay County
Hayesville – The Lady Knights carried a 17-set win streak into Tuesday’s Smoky Mountain Conference showdown at Hayesville.
After an impressive start to divisional play last week, Robbinsville was simply looking to escape “The Hive” without so much as a sting, while prepping for another pair of road matches next week.
Instead, the Lady Jackets brought the fight from the opening serve and ultimately accomplished something that had not came to pass in almost six years: defeat the Lady Knights. Robbinsville fell in a hotly-contested 25-27, 21-25, 23-25 match, to suffer its first loss to Hayesville (5-3, 2-1) since Oct. 16, 2018 – the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Following a grueling stretch of six matches in a span of just five days – with five of the affairs occurring on the road – Robbinsville (9-2, 2-1) enjoyed a much-lighter schedule last week. The Knights swept Murphy (2-3, 1-2) at home Aug. 27, before traveling to Cherokee County on Aug. 29 and knocked off Andrews (2-5, 0-3) in succession: 25-17, 25-14, 25-16.
JV, middle school
In JV action, Robbinsville (3-4) also split the bill after sweeping Andrews 25-7, 25-22; before falling in three to Hayesville 25-15, 17-25, 8-15.
The middle school Knights (2-1) needed a tiebreaker to vanquish Andrews 25-7, 21-25, 16-14, but lost 23-25, 25-22, 8-15 at Hayesville.
