Lady Knights advance to 2nd round of postseason
Robbinsville – Now that’s how you put the rest of the playoff picture on notice.
In what can only be described as a lopsided affair, the Robbinsville Lady Knights (No. 13 seed, 18-6) began Tuesday’s first-round postseason pairing with Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (No. 20, 12-13) on a 22-0 run.
Overall, the Lady Gryphons were limited to a mere eight points in the first half and by the fourth quarter, the Knights had opened up a big-enough lead to institute a running clock, with Robbinsville cruising to a 60-17 win.
“In games like this, you don’t let teams hang around,” said Knights head coach Lucas Ford. “The girls pushed tempo really well and shot the ball really well.”
At the forefront of the scoreline was Desta Trammell, who dropped 20 on the Lady Gryphons. She also had four steals, two assists and a rebound.
Yeika Jimenez finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists, while Zoie Shuler added 11 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Others to score were Halee Anderson and Kensley Phillips with five each; Aubrie Wachacha 4 and Montana Buchanan 2.
The win sets up Robbinsville’s first road trip of the playoffs, as the Lady Knights travel to Spencer tonight, for a showdown with the No. 4-seeded North Rowan Lady Cavaliers (19-8).
“We’re going to hang our hat on our defense, keep them in front of us, rebound the ball and push tempo,” Ford said. “Look at last year’s playoffs … we went to East Surry, started off a little bit flat, but we ended up playing one of our best games and knocked them off.”
