Black Knights make indoor track history
Mill Spring – Leave it to Robbinsville to carve out a new chapter in its long-standing lineage of sports dominance.
For the first time in school history, the Black Knights were named Smoky Mountain Conference Indoor Track champions, besting Swain County 112-105 at Jan. 28's divisional-title meet in Mill Spring.
Held inside the massive Tryon International Equestrian Center, Robbinsville's team score benefitted greatly from nine All-Conference champions (event winners) and four honorable mentions (second-place finishers).
Colton McCoy completed the hat trick, claiming victory in the 500-meter dash (1:08.88) and leaping ahead of the field in both the long (18' 10") and triple (37' 5 ¼") jumps. Nathan Frederick crossed the finish line first in the 1,000-meter run (2:40.06), as did Xamuel Wachacha in the 1,600-meter (4:48.98) and Landon Boxberger in the 3,200 (11:12.94).
Robbinsville's 4x800 (8:30.57) and 4x400 (3:36.28) relays also seized top billing, while Isiac Collins (50' 7 ½") prevailed in the shot put.
Honorable mentions went to Austin Bohn (500-meter dash, 1:16); Benjamin Frederick (1,600-meter run, 4:49.71); and Benjamin Koeller (1,000-meter run, 3:01.19 and 3,200-meter run, 11:37.41).
