Hiker rescued after seizure

Santeetlah – Graham County Fire and Rescue members – along with U.S. Forest Service employees – responded to a medical emergency inside the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest around 11:30 a.m., May 20.  Doris Neuman – 67 of Louisville, Ky. – was hiking the Memorial Loop Trail when she suffered a seizure.

Appalachian Trail hiker rescued

Fontana Dam – The Graham County 911 Center received a cell phone call from a female hiker on the Appalachian Trail, requesting assistance just after 3 p.m., Monday.  Elayna Simmons, 28 of Cincinnati, Ohio, was hiking alone when she became ill almost five miles in on the trail from Fontana Dam.

Fire, rescue combine forces

The Graham County Rescue Squad and Graham County Fire Department will soon become a single unit.  Commander Jeff Millsaps announced plans for the merger at the squad’s December meeting.

Trail hiker falls ill, rescued

A hiker who had fallen ill was rescued from the Appalachian Trail on Saturday. The Graham County 911 center received a call from a woman around 10:45 a.m., saying her father was sick and might need some assistance in getting out of the woods.

Rescue squad gets new equipment

The Graham County Rescue Squad recently received a new piece of equipment that will be used in rescuing injured persons from woodland areas. The new wheeled-basket stretcher was purchased from Cascade Rescue in Sand Point, Idaho.

Lost couple located

Watia – Two hikers that became lost after a hike from the Nantahala Gorge area on Labor Day were located later that night.
