Fontana Dam – At 9:22 p.m. Monday, state troopers Ty Gibbs and Johnathan Jones responded to a crash in the 1500 block of Fontana Dam, on Hwy. 28.
The crash involved a 73-year old female, driving a Ford Fiat, who collided into a guardrail, slid across the embankment and overturned. Gibbs said the female was trapped in her car for approximately 10-15 minutes before responders arrived.
The Stecoah Rescue Squad removed the female from the vehicle, where she was transported to Swain Community Hospital in Bryson City, by ambulance. She was later transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville by helicopter.
The driver’s condition and name was not available at Wednesday’s press deadline, pending notification of next-of-kin.
