Lake Santeetlah Preservation Group
Lake Santeetlah – The annual effort to help keep one of Graham County’s main tourism draws aesthetically pleasing is just around the corner.
The non-profit Lake Santeetlah Preservation Group has announced that its next clean-up will take place Saturday, May 4. Registration will begin at the Cheoah Ranger District office (1070 Massey Branch Road) at 8 a.m.; volunteers and donations are welcome. Lunch will be served.
The group’s initial foray into the water was a huge success, with the Sept. 24, 2022 effort drawing over 70 volunteers to the event. An estimated 2 ½ tons of debris was removed from the lake, thanks to a large contingent of boats, volunteers and sizable dumpsters.
Lake Santeetlah Preservation Group – a 501(c)(3) non-profit, established in March 2021 – was created to protect and preserve the ecology of Lake Santeetlah, its tributaries and watershed through advocacy and program development.
According to its mission statement, the group’s goals are “critical to maintaining Lake Santeetlah’s natural features, ensuring its sustainability, and the investment in and enjoyment of” the lake. The board is comprised of executive director Dirk Cody, vice chair Avis Phillips, treasurer Maxine Bahr and secretary Randall Veal.
As the organization is a non-profit, donations are tax deductible. Donations can be dropped off at Southland Realty (255 Rodney Orr Bypass) or mailed to: P.O. Box 65, Robbinsville, NC 28771.
