Robbinsville – Though the format was slightly altered, the Graham Cancer Support Group's annual musical fundraiser was still a hit.
Saturday's two-hour "Music Variety Show" was a departure from the competition format hosted by the 501(c)3 for the first three years of its existence, but still featured many of the same elements that has made the event a yearly success.
Six performances were spaced between a variety of cake and silent auctions inside Robbinsville High School, and a pre-show meal also contributed to the cause.
Gracing the stage were:
* Youth: The Shepherd's Call Baptist Church Youth Choir, as well as the trio of Daylon Anderson, Bella Carpenter and Marley Carpenter;
* Pop: Helen Ward;
* Gospel: Jernie Greene and Cadence Holder, William Taylor;
* Bluegrass: Julie Nelms and Sonny Reighard.
Graham Cancer Support Group President Marg Lewis told The Star on Tuesday that the effort raised $4,350; as in the past, all funding goes toward helping local patients in their battle against the disease.
Lewis told the audience at the beginning of Saturday's festivities that since its Aug. 1, 2019 formation, the group has assisted 153 patients – behind the fundraising of $177,650.
The musical show was first launched by the group in 2022 and to date, has netted almost $30,000 alone.
Patients battling cancer can apply to receive assistance on everything from bills to travel expenses, as well as clothing and food. According to its Facebook page, the group's mission statement is to "provide aid to the residents of Graham County who are battling cancer and make sure they are not facing the fight alone. Through monetary donations to help with expenses, gifts of time including home assistance with chores and daily activities, we pledge to support our community."
The show can be viewed on The Star's YouTube channel.
