Angie Knight
Robbinsville – A familiar face has been named the new Graham County Public Health Director.
Angie Knight will step into the role Monday, after being hired by a committee. She was formally introduced as the new director at Tuesday's board of commissioners meeting.
"I just want to thank you for your vote of confidence, (in putting me) in this position," Knight told the board. "I love the citizens of Graham County and I'm really excited to be going forward in this position, to continue to serve our county."
Members of the board also expressed their excitement about her appointment.
"I'm personally excited to have you on-board," said commissioner Natasha Williams. "I think you've done great for our community thus far, and I have no doubt you'll do great with this."
"Ditto," added commissioner Connie Orr. "Thank you for the sacrifices you will be making."
Knight served as Graham County Schools Superintendent for nine years, retiring from the role after the 2023-24 calendar wrapped up. She was named the Region 8 Superintendent of the Year in 2023.
Knight also worked as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Federal Programs. Since retiring as Superintendent, she has assisted the Snowbird N.E.S.T. (Native Education Snowbird Traditions).
Both County Manager Brady Cody and Commission Board Chair Meggan Smith recused themselves from all aspects of the hiring process, as Cody is Knight's son-in-law and Smith is employed by the health department. A resolution was approved by commissioners Tuesday to continue the practice in all matters related to Knight's employment.
Knight replaces Donna Stephens, who resigned in July to take over as administrator of Graham Healthcare & Rehabilitation. Stephens became the Graham County Public Health Director on March 2, 2023 and obtained over $2 million in grants toward the construction of a planned fitness center.
Stephens will maintain a seat on the Graham County Health Board.
