Robbinsville High brightening final semester for seniors
Robbinsville – We are collectively living through a part of history that has unfortunately robbed students of many normal school activities.
Yearly traditions – such as prom and pep rallies – have fell to the wayside, victims of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
However, an idea sparked by Graham County Schools Social Worker Katrina Nelms might reinvigorate the idea of normalcy. Nelms has organized a Senior Sunrise Celebration, which will be held at 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, in front of Robbinsville High School.
“We want this event to be fun for our seniors, and to give them hope and encouragement of a better tomorrow,” Nelms said. “The pandemic has taken away so much, and we want the students to know we care. We want to try to give them a celebration (like) no other senior class has had.”
The packed schedule will include motivational speakers, a wish-release activity, and complimentary hot chocolate and cider. As the morning progresses, seniors will be treated to a pancake breakfast with school staff and three photo booths will be set up, each with a unique theme: prom, pep-rally and Class of 2021.
“The idea is for them to at least have memories of making these pictures together, considering they are not getting to actually have prom and pep rallies,” Nelms said. “We will have face paint, spirit sticks, crowns, etc., for these booths. But maybe some of the girls have prom dresses they didn’t get to wear last year, that they would like to have their picture made in.”
Seniors who plan to attend are asked to RSVP at the Robbinsville High front office. For details, call Nelms at 479-9840.
