The children are our future

Schools make sure students are taken care of

Robbinsville – With the Sunday, March 15 closing of schools across North Carolina came questions from parents and students, and a lack of answers.

Parents became concerned about the well-being of their children, not sure if they would get the education and nutrition that they need. The set return date of Monday, March 30 was not final, and now has been extended to end at least by Friday, May 15.

Communities were required to wait patiently for further government response. While waiting for further information, Graham County Schools provided some relief for students and parents.

Graham County Schools’ child nutrition departments have provided healthy breakfast and lunch options to students Monday–Friday, distributing from schools and community churches. Every effort from staff was given to provide students a healthy, happy and educational break.

Google Classroom – an online virtual classroom – is a key part of student’s education. Teachers upload classwork to the platform for students to complete. With the availability of home internet, Classroom is being used to smoothly transition work from a face to face class to the safety of student’s homes.

Students who do not have access to internet at home are encouraged to collect classwork when they collect their free meals.

“Our main concern is the safety and well-being of staff and students,” said vice principal Erica Sawyer.

While schools are making every effort to make this difficult time easier for students, many students have expressed disappointment.

“I really think the school is doing everything they can, and I really appreciate it,” said Robbinsville High School senior Siera Prather. “I can’t help but be a little disappointed. The seniors are missing out on a huge part of their last year of school.

I am worried about prom and graduation, but I know that if things get canceled, it is for the best.”

“I’m not worried about getting my work done and I feel much safer, now that the schools are letting us stay home,” added junior Max Norris. “I just hope I get to see my friends again this year, especially the seniors who are graduating.”
