New support group formed in Robbinsville
Robbinsville – When Relay for Life was no longer an option in Graham County, many residents were left without a support group during some of their most challenging moments.
But a new entity, the Graham Cancer Support Group, has been formed to fill the void.
Vicki Walsh, president of the group, has already made several inroads, setting up fundraisers around Robbinsville, including an upcoming softball tournament at P&J fields Saturday in Tallulah.
“When Relay of Life folded, we wanted to expand on the concept and make it better,” Walsh said.
The tournament will feature raffles, concessions and fundraising during games, such as payments for extra balls during at-bats.
Innovations Salon has set up a Care Room to assist ladies who are undergoing cancer treatment. Items such as scarves, hats, bras and wigs are available as needed.
Around town, assistance can be attained for such needs as transportation and in-home care at Pop & Nana’s, United Community Bank and Mountain Memories.
“We want to be an organization that supports people through this,” Walsh added.
The group has also applied for 501c3 (non-profit) status and meets on the third Tuesday of every month at United Community Bank.
Meetings begin at 6 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend.
