Sparks set to fly on 4th of July

Robbinsville – Just when it looked like the Fourth of July holiday would be without a fireworks display in Graham County, the Town of Robbinsville worked out a deal.

Graham County Festivals Director Brian Johnson confirmed a contract with Virginia Skypainters of South Boston, Va., on Friday afternoon, which will bring a fireworks show to Robbinsville at 10 p.m. Friday, July 3.

It was a photo finish, as the town’s normal vendor in South Carolina was booked this year.

“We got the only available slot left,” Johnson said. “We hope they will be amazing fireworks.”

Johnson and Graham County Travel & Tourism Director Daniel Allison worked diligently to find an alternate vendor, with Virginia Skypainters originally placing Robbinsville on a waiting list. But thanks to a last-minute cancelation elsewhere – with COVID-19 being cited as the culprit – Graham County is back in the show.

“We called all kinds of companies across the Southeast,” Johnson said. “We found these people (Virginia Skypainters), but they had two bookings that same night and they said they couldn’t do it, because the Fourth falls on a weekend.

“Then they called back and said they had an opening.”

The Robbinsville Tourism Authority will also be providing funds for the event.
