The holiday season possesses a special kind of magic and reverence for tradition, and the John C. Campbell Folk School’s annual Holiday in the Mountains Week (December 9–13) reflects that seasonal spirit. The week kicks off on Monday, December 9 with “A Celebration of Carving with Helen Gibson.” Gibson is an internationally known master carver and a John C. Campbell Folk School Brasstown Carver. She is a native of Murphy and has been the Resident Artist in Woodcarving at the Folk School since 1990. She is co-author of several carving instructional books, most recently Carving Moses with Helen Gibson.

Helen will spend the week demonstrating and sharing her knowledge of carving for students and visitors. On Monday, December 9 at 7pm, she will join other local carvers in "A Celebration of Carving," a public event for students and community to come together and learn about the history and future of the Brasstown Carvers.

In addition, the week’s festivities will feature Bob Grove’s much-loved dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” on Wednesday December 11, at 7 p.m. Resplendent in period costume, Bob’s memorable delivery includes adopting every character’s distinctive voice. Immediately afterward, the Brasstown Morris Dancers will present an infectious four-part holiday dance performance that will have you tapping your toes with delight.

The Brasstown Ringers’ Annual Holiday Concert will take place on Friday, December 13 at 7 p.m. This popular community handbell group, consisting of dedicated members from western North Carolina and northern Georgia, will present a repertoire of new music along with audience favorites. Donations are welcome.
