Robbinsville – The Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) club at Robbinsville High School participated in the National Service Project, which took place the week of Nov. 18-22.

Students created a fundraiser to raise money for kids with cancer called Penny Wars.

Club members created boxes and placed in each high school and middle school classroom for teachers and students. Students were encouraged to put in pennies or dollars to increase their balance.

However, silver change deducted from a classrooms balance, making it a rivalry across the school. Each day, club members would stay after school, count the amount each class had and create a leaderboard with the top three competitors.

The club’s goal was to raise $1,400, which would surpass the $1,300 raised last year. This year, both schools raised $1,407.

It was a tough competition, but in the end, Mrs. Karen Lail’s first period class raised the most money for the high school with $412 and Mr. Bryan Beasley’s homeroom raised the most for the middle school with over $200. Both classes received a pizza party and the entire high school and middle school got rewarded with ice cream for meeting the goal.

The money raised was donated to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and to a high school student at Swain County High School who is currently battling a brain tumor.

The Robbinsville HOSA Club would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and who gave money for this charitable cause.
