Ruby Annas is The Graham Star’s new staff writer.
Tallulah – Proudly serving as Graham County’s hometown newspaper since 1955, The Graham Star has fulfilled a 7-month search for the next author of local events for its loyal readers.
Ruby Annas began her journalism career as the Star’s new staff writer Sept. 18.
In her brief time at the news desk, Annas has already displayed an aptitude for the often-thankless task at hand: delivering quality, reliable journalism to those who seek out a copy of the Star each week.
“Being a staff writer at The Graham Star has been an interesting experience,” Annas said. “This is my first journalism job and honestly, it is challenging. I do enjoy experiencing the many details of the town and trying to piece them all together.
“My goal is to always report the truth and serve the community.”
Annas grew up in Granite Falls, before attending Western Carolina University and obtaining a degree in communication (with a concentration in journalism). She completed the pursuit of her college diploma by interning with The Sylva Herald over the summer.
“As soon as Ruby’s resume and work samples pinged my inbox, I knew our search for the next staff writer was over,” Graham Star publisher/editor Kevin Hensley said. “Her interview showed my instincts were correct: Ruby is eager to learn and passionate about sustainable journalism, which is hard to find in today’s society.
“My suspicions about her dedication to what we do were solidified when she penned her introductory column, which ran in our Sept. 21 edition (‘Never stop asking questions’). Sadly, too many journalists choose to take the easy road when reporting today: Ruby’s tale of questioning the little things in life to the point of aggravating her father told me she was destined to be a journalist from the word ‘go.’
“We are very fortunate to have her aboard.”
