Tallulah – It is hard to imagine that someone would deliberately – or even unintentionally – bring harm to an elderly or handicapped individual.
Unfortunately, such abuse is a widespread problem. This abuse can occur in the form of financial, emotional, physical or sexual abuse.
Neglecting care may also be considered a form of abuse.
On Thursday, June 15 – National Elder Abuse Awareness Day – Graham County Social Services will hold an Elder Abuse Resource Fair. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Graham County Community Center (196 Knight St., Robbinsville).
The purpose of the fair is to raise awareness of those in the county who may be experiencing abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The goal of the Adult Services of Graham County is to educate the public and get the word out about the services provided for those in need, while allowing individuals to remain in their home and care for themselves if they are safe.
However, if they are being mistreated or unable to care for themselves, there is help available.
“If you think someone needs our help, please call us,” encouraged Michelle Jones, who is in charge of adult services for the county and coordinates the fair.
Everyone is invited to attend and learn more about this program. Informational booths with freebies will be available and door prizes will be given.
Show your respect to those who have given our generation such a beautiful county to grow up in and enjoy by protecting them from harm and neglect.
Old age is no respecter of persons – it is a reality, and it is coming to each of us.
