Election 2024
Robbinsville – Provisionals and lingering absentees made little impact on a pair of local races in the 2024 general election.
Following Nov. 14’s provisional meeting and Friday’s canvassing, the Graham County Board of Elections officially certified the final voting numbers for Nov. 5’s ballot.
Friday’s certification afforded the following tallies in the race for the Graham County Board of Commissioners:
* Meggan Smith (R): 3,103 (an increase of 15 from Nov. 5);
* Lynn Cody (R): 2,264 (an increase of 10);
* Connie Orr (R): 2,191 (an increase of 14);
* Thomas Menard (U): 2,109 (an increase of seven);
* Machelle Crisp (D): 1,374 (an increase of three).
Cody and Orr retained their seats; Smith will fill the seat left by Keith Eller, who chose to not seek re-election. With Orr, Smith and Natasha Williams on the panel, the Graham County Board of Commissioners has its first known female majority in history.
Orr will be sworn in at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 2, during a special-called organizational meeting. As part of the proceedings, the board will vote on a chair and vice chair.
Incumbent Republicans Jonathan Allison and Pam Knott both failed to receive enough votes to advance past the March primary in the sprint for school board. Eddie Howell and Corey Snider will be sworn into office during Dec. 3’s regularly-scheduled meeting.
* Eddie Howell (R): 3,301 (an increase of 12);
* Corey Snider (R): 3,164 (an increase of 12);
* Rodney Nelson (R): 2,930 (an increase of 14);
* Robert Anderson (U): 1,381 (an increase of six).
Nelson is the current chair of the board of education and is the only incumbent to maintain a seat.
Other races at the regional, statewide and national levels were also unaffected; of note, Donald Trump (R) was the only presidential candidate to receive additional votes from provisionals, ending with 3,883 nods from Graham County voters.
The board of elections held a recount after Wednesday’s press deadline for the N.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice, Seat 6 race.
The recount was held statewide.
