Fontana Dam – A 10-acre forest fire on Fontana Lake is now contained.
The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26, near backcountry campsite 87 on Fontana Lake. The campsite is located on the peninsula closet to the Fontana Dam.
The fire was smoldering and creeping through timber and brush, with significant leaf litter. Firefighters used a full suppression attack and there was no threat to fire lines at that time.
Great Smoky Mountain firefighters were on the scene earlier that evening, and remained in the area overnight to monitor and continue to suppress the fire.
No structures are in danger because of the fire, and smoke may be visible as the fire smolders in leaf litter and brush. Campsite 87 is closed to all use.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
