From staff reports

The Nantahala National Forest will begin seasonal road closures on the Cheoah Ranger District today.

Roads are expected to reopen Wednesday, April 1, depending on the weather. Closing roads to motorized vehicles seasonally helps reduce road maintenance costs. It also decreases wildlife disturbance, so they can conserve energy while food is scarce. During long bouts of adverse weather, roads may be closed to protect public safety.

The following roads will be closed:

* Big Fat (FSR 62)

* Farley Cove (FSR 407)

*Tatham Gap/Long Creek (FSR 423)

* Long Hungry (FSR 1127)

* Santeelah Creek (FSR 81)

On all Forest Service roads, emergency closures due to weather or resource conditions can occur at any time.

For current road conditions and status, contact the Cheoah Ranger District at 479-6431. The post is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
