Blaze chars camper

Cheoah – A camper trailer was destroyed and left a total loss following a fire on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020. At approximately 1:45 p.m., Graham County volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a trailer fire in the 110 block of Gregory Hollow Road.

More lost hikers found

Cheoah – Holidays are usually busy times for rescue personnel. This Labor Day weekend was no exception. Graham County 911 dispatchers received a cell phone call shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, from a couple in the Joyce Kilmer Forest, stating that they were lost.

Death deemed suspicious

Cheoah – Graham County authorities are treating the discovery of a Robbinsville man’s body as “suspicious.” Thomas Storm Moose, 24, of Robbinsville, was found dead off Lower Mountain Creek Road on Aug. 16. He had been reported missing to authorities on Aug. 12.

Hikers located

If the last few months have taught hikers who visit Graham County for exploration anything, it is that one wrong turn can throw you off the trail. Two separate incidents in the last week have solidified that belief.

Smoky Mountain Hydro to conduct aerial spraying of herbicides

Smoky Mountain Hydro LLC has announced that aerial spraying of herbicides will be taking place, beginning on Tuesday and ending Friday, along the following routes: *From the Cheoah powerhouse in Graham County, N.C. to the Calderwood powerhouse in Blount County, Tenn.

Man drowns in Cheoah

Tapoco – The latest Cheoah River Release was marred by tragedy. Around 3 p.m. Saturday, Graham County Emergency Management Services and Rescue Squad personnel responded to a possible drowning neat Bear Creek Falls on the Cheoah River.

Making a mark on history

She has beaten cancer twice and lived to see 18 U.S. presidents, just as many recessions and even a World War. Graham County resident Frances Smith Whitehead celebrated her 100th birthday Tuesday.

Forest roads closing until April

From staff reports The Nantahala National Forest will begin seasonal road closures on the Cheoah Ranger District today. Roads are expected to reopen Wednesday, April 1, depending on the weather. Closing roads to motorized vehicles seasonally helps reduce road maintenance costs.
