First Western fire was an adventure

As fires in the western United States continue to make the news, I am reminded again of my first western fire experience. I had been with the U.S. Forest Service for a little over three years – and had been on several local fires – but nothing like what was ahead. On Aug.

Constitutional crisis

Saturday begins Constitution Week. The holiday commemorates the signing of our Constitution 235 years ago in Philadelphia. Constitution Week reminds us of America’s great heritage and the foundations to our way of life.

Some mysteries written in stone

Living water

4-H summers, spent in the woods

In 2019, Hoot Gibbs and I began assisting in a program of activities with the Graham County 4-H Club, to get young people outdoors more and off-the-couch, where much time was spent texting on their phones.

You can make a difference

Each summer, the Robbinsville United Methodist Church hosts an intern from the Duke Divinity School. This required program for students is called “Field Education,” and gives the students an opportunity to serve in a church setting for 10 weeks.
