Adams breaks single-game rushing record
Robbinsville – He ran like he was mad at the grass.
Black Knight fans are no stranger to the weekly antics of sophomore running back Cuttler Adams – but on Friday night, he etched his name in the Robbinsville record books.
Forty-two touches led to 377 yards on the ground against North Rowan, which edged out the previous school benchmark set by Cruz Galaviz in a six-touchdown, 374-yard effort against East Henderson in 2013.
“First, I want to give God all the glory,” Adams said. “We were a little down by halftime, but we stepped it up and never gave up.
“The team got fired up and we knew if we didn’t come out and play Black Knights football, bad things could happen. But the biggest thing is we never gave up, and the line and our defense stepped it up.”
Through 12 games this season, Adams has racked up 2,362 yards on the ground. In his 1 1/2 years on varsity, he has a total of 2,658.
Adams struck on four separate occasions Friday while playing the Cavaliers, scoring on runs of 8, 59, 54 and 19 yards. The latter three came in the second half, playing a critical role in Robbinsville’s come-from-behind victory.
But the success this season has not been without adversity. A nagging back injury threatened to hamper his impact, as he left a 20-7 road loss to Cherokee early and watched from the sidelines as the Knights upended Murphy one week later.
“I was told (that) more than likely, I would miss the rest of the season,” Adams explained. “So we prayed for the X-ray and it turned out good. I never gave up and I wanted to be there for my team and support them.”
Adams has his chance. Murphy will roll into Graham County on Friday for the fourth round of the postseason.
“We are feeling great and we’re healthy right now, but we have to get better every week,” Adams said.
“We are really excited because it’s Murphy, and they will bring a lot of intensity.”
