Black Knights golf ends championship drought
Hayesville – A 25-year gap in divisional championships found itself buried in the sand bunker Monday.
In a commanding 46-stroke victory, Robbinsville captured its first Smoky Mountain Conference golf title since 2000 by shooting a 721 over the course of the two-day league tournament. The Knights opened play April 25 at Highlands Falls Country Club, before sealing the deal at Mountain Harbour Golf Club in Hayesville.
Three of Robbinsville's golfers placed in the top 10: senior Isaiah Brown was second overall, with a two-day tally of 168; junior Isiac Collins finished seventh, shooting a 178; and sophomore Avery Brown placed ninth, posting a 188.
Trey Lambert (11th, 193) and Cody Crisp (14th, 195) rounded out the collaborative effort. By virtue of their finishes, Brown and Collins were named All-Conference selections.
Robbinsville led at the conclusion of the first round, after compiling a 372 amid damp conditions in Highlands. Cherokee trailed by 14 strokes entering Monday's finale, but dropped to third in the team hunt (783) by the rallying Andrews Wildcats (767).
Practice will only intensify, as Robbinsville advances to its second-straight 1A Western Regional tournament appearance. The match will be held Monday, May 5 at NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville.
