Middle school splits openers

Robbinsville – The next generation of varsity stars began their baseball and softball seasons by hosting Swain County on Tuesday.

The Black Knights fell in a 15-10 slugfest on Loudon Orr Memorial Field, while the Lady Knights fanned the Lady Devils 10-0 at P & J Field.

Showing a ton of grit and determination, Robbinsville carried a 9-6 lead into the top of the sixth of the baseball game. Swain County came to life in the frame, posting a nine-run segment. With sunlight disappearing, the Knights managed one run in response before the game was called at the conclusion of the sixth.

Brayson Anderson was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Black Knights, while Kamden Driver struck out four Maroon Devils in the game.

Just a couple of miles away, Ella Nelms allowed just one hit and disposed of 12 Swain County batters to keep the Devils at-bay.

Meanwhile, Lakin Orr tripled for the Lady Knights, while Myah Winfrey doubled twice and Natalee Myers had a double of her own to propel the offense.

Orr, Winfrey and Myers accounted for all seven of Robbinsville’s RBIs in the game; before the dust settled, Winfrey had three hits.

The Knights are now scheduled to travel to Swain County for a pair of 4 p.m., games today. Robbinsville will return home Thursday, March 13, to host Copper Basin, Tenn.
