Robbinsville – Four new inductees have been selected for the Robbinsville High School Hall of Fame.

Both the 1970 and 1973 state championship football teams, as well as Weston Haney and Terry Trost, will be inducted into the esteemed class at halftime of Friday’s home game against Swain County.

1970 football team

The Black Knights captured the school’s third state title under the guidance of legendary coach Bob Colvin. During the campaign, Robbinsville went 11-2 and was a perfect 4-0 in Smoky Mountain Conference play, clinching a division title in the progress.

The Knights won the 1970 state championship by defeating Saratoga 28-6.

1973 football team

Much like the 1970 Knights, the 1973 state champs finished the year 11-2, but were 3-0 in conference play. Robbinsville still won the Smoky Mountain title.

In the state finals, the Black Knights shut out Rosewood 50-0.

Weston HaneyWeston Haney

A 2008 Robbinsville graduate, Haney was a force in five different sports for the Black Knights.

Haney received numerous accolades. Known most widely for his achievements on the mat, Haney was a two-time recipient of the Most Outstanding Wrestler award and also won the Robbinsville Wrestling Iron Man Award. He was also a three-time conference wrestling champion, the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2008 1A/2A Regional Tournament and won the 1A/2A Regional Championship twice.

Most dubious was the state wrestling championship, which Haney won in 2008. He would later compete on the 2007 N.C. USA Wrestling State Freestyle Team, winning a silver medal. Haney finished his Robbinsville career with a record of 151-31, including 85 pins.

Additionally, Haney was All-Conference in cross-country in 2007 and twice was named All-State in track and field, a sport in which he qualified for the state meet three separate times.

After graduating, Haney continued his grappling career at Appalachian State University, where he lettered in both the 125- and 133-pound weight classes. He was a member of both the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and Appalachian State’s Academic Honor Roll during all four years Haney attended the school. He also won the university’s Scholar Athletic Ring.

On the mat, Haney was a nominee for Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month and a finalist at the 2012 Appalachian Open Wrestling Tournament. He was named the Most Improved Wrestler for the Appalachian State team in 2012.

Haney has since helped coach numerous teams and wrestlers at Robbinsville and even formed the Peak Wrestling Club, a local team that won the 2018 “Small Club” Freestyle Wrestling state championship.

Terry TrostTerry Trost

A 1965 Robbinsville graduate, Trost was the first to score a Robbinsville touchdown after the school became the “Black Knights” in 1961.

Trost was later named the All-Western North Carolina Running Back of the Year during his time as a Black Knight. Trost also received the American Legion Valor Award and the R-Club Outstanding Athlete Award.

His talents also expanded to basketball and track. On the hardwood, Trost was a member of the 1964-65 co-Smoky Mountain Conference championship team.

Trost attended Western Carolina University on a football scholarship after graduation, but left to join the U.S. Air Force in 1966. He toured Vietnam, as well as bases in Asia and Europe. Trost returned to Western in 1970 and received a degree in accounting in 1974. He lives in Robbinsville with his wife, Janice.
