Fall fire season sparked by several outbreaks

With the falling leaves of autumn comes fall fire season and dry fuels in the forest. Local firefighters with the N.C. Forest Service, U.S. Forest Service and volunteer fire departments were busy with small brush fires over the weekend. Around 6 p.m.

Graham County wins big at fair

Fletcher – The 2022 installment of the N.C. Mountain State Fair was kind to both individuals and organizations from Graham County. The annual showcase was held at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher (an Asheville suburb) from Sept. 9-18.

Cherohala Skyway festival draws crowds to Tellico Plains

Tellico Plains, Tenn. – Thousands of spectators converged on Tellico Plains on Saturday, for the sixth annual Cherohala Skyway Festival. The event is a fundraiser for the Charles Hall Museum of History & Heritage, and other organizations in the Tellico Plains area.

Horse arena idea gets footing with county board

Robbinsville – Bonnie Jean Price has been pitching the idea of re-establishing a horse-riding arena in Graham County for the newly formed non-profit saddle club for which she is the spokesman.

Charges temporarily dropped after meth arrest

Robbinsville – The District Attorney’s Office voluntarily dismissed drug charges against a Robbinsville man, in a case called one of the largest methamphetamine raids in Graham County history and the arrest of what Sheriff Jerry Crisp called one of the county’s biggest drug dealers.

Glimpse into yesteryear

Stecoah – An estimated 2,140 people attended the 2022 Stecoah Harvest Festival on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15. The event opened on Friday with a campfire and marshmallow roast, as John Toineeta of Cherokee played his lyrical flute and told about Cherokee history and folklore from 6-8 p.m.

Robbinsville – A chance encounter in Nashville has morphed into a visit from the N.C. Faith & Freedom Coalition. Current Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and former University of Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer will be in Graham County on Thursday, Oct.

Water leak a teachable moment for Santeetlah

Lake Santeetlah – The town experienced a water line break along Nantahala Terrace over the past month, during which town officials learned about the need to issue “boil water” notifications to water customers affected by the break.
