Southern gentleman learns to be careful with hand motions

It’s not likely a respectable newspaperman would dare write this sentence: “I picked up a prostitute Monday night.” Well, my nephew Clay Wilson wrote that sentence as the beginning of a column in 2004, when he was working as education reporter and columnist for the Daily Herald in McDonough, Ga.

It may be hard to tell, but spring is coming

This may sound crazy, but one of my favorite days is Dec. 22. That’s the day that daylight hours start getting longer – little by little – and the cold nights shorter. Spring is coming. At one point in my young life, I told my wife I’d like to live and work in Alaska for a couple of years.

Our View: Keep notices in newspapers

Although the N.C. General Assembly’s legislative session is just underway, some of the usual suspects are trying to draft a local bill removing the requirement to publish public notices in newspapers.  That would be a bad move for openness and transparency in state government.

Influenced by Southern Gospel music

My love of music was pounded into me.  Not with a stick, but by the calloused fingers of my grandmother – pounding keys of her mostly out-of-tune upright piano. Nanny’s repertoire was scant, but she could make her secondhand Baldwin jump.

The Serenity Prayer

There is a Christian prayer that has given strength and comfort to millions.  The prayer is simply known as the Serenity Prayer. You may has read it in a devotional book, seen it on a plaque or card, or even heard it in a sermon.
