Air Force Memorial Act re-introduced

Cherohala – U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C. of Hendersonville) recently re-introduced legislation that would move a memorial off of the Cherohala Skyway and closer to the site of a crash that killed nine U.S. Air Force crew members more than 42 years ago.

Cherohala Skyway festival draws crowds to Tellico Plains

Tellico Plains, Tenn. – Thousands of spectators converged on Tellico Plains on Saturday, for the sixth annual Cherohala Skyway Festival. The event is a fundraiser for the Charles Hall Museum of History & Heritage, and other organizations in the Tellico Plains area.

Robbinsville – Graham County Travel & Tourism is partnering with its counterpart in Monroe County, Tenn., to promote fall-season sightseeing on the Cherohala Skyway. Motorists can stop at visitor centers in Robbinsville and Tellico Plains, Tenn.
The Cherohala Skyway marked its 25th anniversary earlier in October. The road runs from Robbinsville to Tellico Plains, Tenn., offering stunning views and ascending to 5,400 feet at its highest point.

Taking the high road

The Cherohala Skyway celebrated a major milestone earlier this month, marking a quarter century open on Oct. 12.  The road – which connects Robbinsville with Tellico Plains, Tenn. – was opened to travelers for the first time on Oct. 12, 1996 and is one of the country’s National Scenic Byways.

Personnel complete pair of search missions

Hikers have kept regional emergency personnel busy for most of 2020. Officials with the Graham County Rescue Squad, U.S. Forest Service and the Monroe County, Tenn. Rescue Squad and EMS were dispatched to a pair of separate incidents last week, both of which began in Graham County.

Georgia hiker rescued

Cheoah – The Graham County and Stecoah rescue squads were joined by the Monroe County, Tenn. Rescue Squad and members of the U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday, July 21, in response to a 5 p.m. call from a hiker needing assistance in the Slickrock Creek area.
