* Graham County incurred record snowfall, with estimates ranging between 22-24 inches. One report of 34 inches was measured at Hooper Bald. Around 50% of the county lost power, while local North Carolina Department of Transportation labored for 36 consecutive hours on-shift to clear roads. The heavy snowfall was believed to be the largest in the county since the 1940s. Update: The famed "Blizzard of '93" was less than six years away.
* At a Graham County Board of Commissioners meeting, Larry Queen was named the recreation director; Arvil Webster, Gladys Jordan and Martha Rogers were re-appointed to three-year terms on the county's domiciliary home committee; while Eunice Odom, Diane Carson and Wayne Carringer were each appointed to initial three-year terms on the committee.

* Representatives with the N.C. Department of Transportation held a public hearing during a Graham County Board of Commissioners meeting, to discuss the progress made on a program set up to improve secondary roads across the county. First established in May 1979, 15 miles of the unpaved 80 across the county had seen improvements. Work on the immediate docket included a 1.3-mile stretch of Buck Campbell Road – which would cost $41,646 – as well as upgrades to Santeetlah and J.D. Allen roads.
* Rodney Orr won the National Motorcross Championship at Atlanta Stadium, which sent the Robbinsville native to Houston, Texas to compete in the Grand Nationals. Orr unfortunately wrecked in the national race, suffering a broken leg. Update: Travelers on U.S. 129 today will find the majority of Robbinsville's businesses along Rodney Orr Bypass.
April 9, 1971
* Calvin Hollifield won over Graham Star Editor Stella Sawyer by offering her an egg while having his photo taken, to be named the winner of the annual Easter Babies Contest. The 11-month-old was the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Hollifield.
* The Eller Branch home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bridges was partially salvaged by the quick response of local firefighters, after a blaze of "undetermined origin roared" through the couple's home. The report noted that firefighters were unable to combat the flames quicker due to numerous onlookers lining the roadway on either side of Eller Branch Road.
