* Robbinsville's Jesse Ralph Jenkins was recommended to fill the position of U.S. Marshal for western North Carolina by U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms. The post was vacated when Max Wilson resigned to take a job with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office. Helms touted Jenkins' "long-term experience in personnel management and corporate operations, public service, and military and security matters" in his letter of recommendation to President Ronald Reagan.
* The Graham County Public Library began proudly flying a flag that had recently been atop the U.S. Capitol in honor of Sgt. Joyce Kilmer. American Legion Post 192 Commander Wayne Carringer and Rep. Bill Hendon were responsible for obtaining the flag for the library. Shown on the front page of The Star with Carringer and the flag were Friends of the Library members Betty Bradford, Ruth Harrold, Jo Larson, Lee Erickson, Eleanor McCafferty, Lorraine Briggs and Bill Bradford.

* Robbinsville High School won the third annual Tri-County Community College Academic Bowl in Murphy, defeating Swain County 530-365 in the finals after surpassing Andrews 685-175 the week prior. It was the second-straight bowl championship for Robbinsville. Members of the team were seniors Benita Lloyd, Preston Holder, Kimm Brock, Robert Carver, Jim Stephens and Russell Crisp.
* State American Legion Commander Fred Corbett became the first in his position to visit Graham County in 15 years. Welcoming Corbett were Cherokee American Legion Post 143 Commander Jeff Thomas; Robbinsville American Legion Post 192 Commander Curtis Griggs; and Franklin American Legion Post 108 Commander Tommy Fouts.

* Franklin native John M. Manuel received a transfer from a Lees Carpet plant in Mexico to a role as manufacturing superintendent at Fontana. Manuel was a graduate of Clemson University, where he obtained a degree in industrial management.
* Fairey Varner was crowned "Miss Laurel" at Mars Hill College's annual beauty pageant. A Robbinsville graduate, Varner was a math major at Mars Hill.
