* Shortly after being sworn in as a new county commissioner, Chester Crisp was named as the board's chairman. Crisp volunteered to perform his duties for free – a savings of $16,000 for Graham County.
* Santeetlah Road was closed due to a landslide on the newly-opened Tellico-Robbinsville Road, which occurred one mile west of Santeetlah Gap. The cause was traced to a fill-slope failure. The slide was cleared for local construction and limited traffic flow to resume some time later.

* The newly-elected Graham County Board of Education was officially sworn in to office: Ralph J. Jenkins, Warner Deyton, Wallace Jenkins, Wayne Carringer and Larry Wiggins. Jenkins was also appointed as board chairman, for a two-year term. Later in the meeting, the contract of superintendent Modeal Walsh was renewed, for a term of four years.
* The N.C. Wildlife Commission was set to host a public meeting at Stecoah School, concerning a local deer restoration program in the Cheoah mountains of both Graham and Swain counties.

* In a controversial move, Marietta SuHart and Dale Huddleston were fired as the respective director and assistant director of Four Square Community Action, Inc. The meeting in which the actions took place was under scrutiny, as minutes taken at the gathering indicated a proper quorum was present to make personnel moves – something many challenged as incorrect. Randall Shields was elected director in place of SuHart.
* The Village Shopping Center was set to open in Robbinsville on Dec. 7. Already set up for business was Delozier Drug Store, The Villager, Town & Country Shop, Merle Norman Cosmetic Salon and the House of Beauty. Update: The plaza remains open today off Rodney Orr Bypass, albeit with a completely different clientele from 55 years ago.
