Solo trek

Stecoah – After logging 150 miles on the Appalachian Trail since mid-February, on May 5 – with a good night’s sleep in her own bed behind her – Graham County resident Kelly Karr got a ride to Stecoah Gap from her husband Raymond and resumed her 2,190-mile journey.

Nunez enters ‘not guilty’ plea

Robbinsville – A Robbinsville man accused in the February death of his 8-month-old daughter pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in Graham County Superior Court on May 4. Corbin Nunez – 22 and a resident of the Five Points community – was arrested on Feb.

GOP Senate candidate visits Robbinsville

Robbinsville – U.S. Rep. Ted Budd is running for the U.S. Senate and in a crowded field of 14 seeking the Republican nomination in North Carolina, the Freedom Caucus member is arguably the most conservative and the only one who is endorsed by Former President Donald Trump.

Graham County Schools to ask for bigger contribution

Robbinsville – Earlier this year, an auditor advised that Graham County School District has been operating “paycheck to paycheck” and needed an additional $100,000 a year contribution from the county to maintain basic operations. It turns out that estimate was optimistic.

Lake Santeetlah town council tweaks spending plan

Lake Santeetlah – Councilwoman Tina Emerson, who is the Town of Lake Santeetlah’s finance officer, filled in some blanks on April 28, which were left following the first budget workshop a week earlier. The town has many needs and must haves in the upcoming budget.

Robbinsville – N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein visited Robbinsville on April 28, formally announcing terms of an opioid settlement with the pharmaceutical industry in a county among the worst in the state affected by illegal narcotics.
