DOT audit findings explained by board member

The recent release of a N.C. Department of Transportation audit – performed by state auditor Beth Wood – has raised its share of eyebrows. The findings determined that the DOT overspent its budget by $742 million in 2019.

Jason Marino, a 24-year Navy Veteran and Graham County resident, was promoted to Master Chief earlier this month.  A Navy Seabee, Marino traveled to Greenville for a socially-distanced promotion ceremony.

Sweetgum Baptist Church on Old Tallulah Road has been one of the few in Graham County to continue worship services during the COVID-19 pandemic, but has opted to hold parking lot services. A federal judge ruled Saturday that North Carolina cannot outlaw indoor services and Sweetgum itself opted to not convene in the sanctuary until Sunday, May 24.

On paper, it appears that Graham County has North Carolina’s lowest response rate for the 2020 U.S. Census.  A self-response rate chart released May 2 indicated that only 19.8 percent of Graham residents have completed the decennial survey, putting the county dead last in the state.
