Henry Lee King

On May 5, 2020, Henry Lee King was suddenly called home to be with the Lord from his home at King’s Grocery in Bryson City, N.C.  Henry was born in Bryson City to the late Hill and Vesta King on Oct. 24, 1937.

County clarifies closure of borders

Big inning dooms Knights

Bryson City – Entering the fifth inning of the final Robbinsville sporting event for the foreseeable future, things were knotted at 0-0. The Black Knights broke the deadline in the top of the frame and seemed poised to take command as the game entered the bottom of the fifth.

They came to play

Robbinsville – Anyone reading the record book in the future will come across Friday’s home game against Swain County and see that Robbinsville suffered its eighth loss of the season. Perhaps what might get overlooked is just how close the game was.

Knights sweep Swain

Bryson City – Robbinsville’s middle school basketball teams swept Swain County on Nov. 21, with the girls (2-1) winning 42-24 and the boys (3-0) triumphing 55-52. Xander Wachacha led the boys with 23 points.

Shaped-note singing lecture in Swain

Bryson City – “A History of Shaped-Note Singing and the Shaping of Church Music In Appalachia” is the title of the presentation by Curtis Blanton for the Nov. 7 meeting of the Swain County Genealogical and Historical Society. Shaped-note singing took on its American form in the 1790’s.

Students learn arts and crafts

Stecoah – The Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center hosted a week-long Arrowmont ArtReach-on-the-Road program which gave more than 340 students from Graham and Swain counties the chance to spend a day studying traditional Appalachian arts and crafts in a studio setting.
