July 25, 1991

* Graham County’s first official windmill was built on the property of Con Gladden in the East Buffalo community. Gladden said the windmill – which stood 26 feet tall – was powerful enough to power his entire home.

* An afternoon of picking blueberries almost turned fatal for 70-year-old Henry Wiggins, who was found collapsed along the Tsali horse trail. Wiggins was rushed to Harris Regional Hospital, where it was confirmed that he suffered a heat stroke. Graham County was undergoing an unusually-high heatwave at the time, with temperatures lingering in the low 100s on some days.

July 25, 1985

* A special-called Graham County Board of Education meeting publicly announced the appointment of David Crowe as chairman and Ira Rogers as the Democratic replacement for Roger Millsaps, who had resigned three weeks prior. Crowe was unanimously voted as chair following a nomination from Warner Deyton, which was seconded by Cecil Rogers.

* Grace Mountainside Church officially began welcoming both Episcopalians and Lutherans, in a joint effort that was initially approved two years earlier by the Southeastern District of the American Lutheran Church. Deacon Steve Holcomb had been placed in charge of Episcopalian worship, while Rev. Harold B. Kildahl served as the Lutheran pastor. Update: 39 years later, the combined sects of Christianity continue to meet under the same roof, at the corner of North and South Main Street in Robbinsville.

July 25, 1974

* Cadet John H. Carpenter graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Carpenter was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. 

* An intoxicated driver struck a pedestrian in front of Snowbird Supply. Milltown resident Edward Grindstaff was injured when Luther Farley’s 1968 Oldsmobile ran off the road and drove through the front of the building. Grindstaff had just exited the store and was thrust completely through a plate-glass window by the collision. Farley was charged with a DUI.
