* After working for six months without pay from Graham County, the Valley River Humane Society pulled the plug on serving the county. According to Valley River Humane Society Director Karen Tankersley, before stopping the program, the county owed almost $10,000 for services – although the county and the humane society had a contract going back eight years.
* According to Robbinsville Mayor Pro Tem Bobby Smith, the town planned to start up the new $7.4 million state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant by the first of September. Once the new plant was in full operation, the old one was set to be dismantled.

* Drs. Jim and Sherlyn Bell Larrison joined Dr. Carringer at Tallulah Health Center in early September. Both were board-certified family physicians. The couple had joined the U.S. Air Force and served four years in the family practice department at the U.S. Air Force Hospital in Germany. They completed their military service at Scott Air Force Base Medical Center in Illinois.
* Daniel Findley and Jonathan Myers attended a five-day workshop for student leaders involved with student councils. More than 300 high school and middle school students attended the workshop at Mars Hill College. Chaperone David Haney accompanied the two young men to Mars Hill and attended the advisor’s workshop.

* Paul Crisp and Karen Taylor won a portable television for accomplishments in their 4-H electric projects. Both received awards as first-place winners in the territory served by Nantahala Power and Light Company. The donors were Vice President and Secretary for Nantahala Power and Light Company W.W. Sloan, and Extension Biological and Agricultural Engineering Specialist at North Carolina State University John Glover.
* The Robbinsville Valley River Chapter of DeMolay won two lopsided victories, becoming the Western Division softball champions. The team later advanced to the state finals. Pictured were Mark Williams, Mark Orr, Randy Price, Mitch Ford, Marty Moody, Walter Postell, Ronnie Williams, Tommy Carpenter, Ross Crisp, Mike Stewart, Roger Jordan, James Lambert, Tommy Carver, James Orr and Clark Brendle. Coaches were Jack Deyton and Gerald Bunyan.
