Edward Earl Davis III, 32 and Roger D. Hood, 18 – both from Ohio – were reported by police to be armed and “extremely dangerous.” The two men were wanted in connection with the slaying of an Asheville pawn shop employee. Davis and Hood were positively identified by Gerald Millsaps – manager of Robbinsville Service Center – as having passed through Graham County. Kathy Lunsford was working at the service center at the time and noticed the two men hanging around, until Lunsford’s husband walked in, and then they quickly left.

* Lady Knights basketball players in grades 7-12 attended the Pat Head-Summit Lady Vols’ summer camp. The nationally-recognized camp had 500 girls from over 28 states in attendance and was the first of three camps Robbinsville participated in during July 1991. Representing the Lady Knights were Brooke Corbin, Kenitra Matheson, Brook Cody, Rhonda Rogers, Cindy Jenkins, Traci Kutcher, Andy Ayers, Dusty Orr, Blythe Bonnette, Maria Millsaps, Tara Williams, Pam Beasley, Jama Howell, Kari Millsaps, Shelley Corbin and Julie Wiggins.

* The Graham County Sheriff’s Office worked with the U.S. Forest Service officers to confiscate as many pot plants as possible. With help of the North Carolina State Bureau Investigator’s spotter plane, officers pulled up 922 plants. Sheriff A.J. Peterson said that the plants – which ranged from 12-14 feet – would bring almost $750,000 on the street. Each plant was worth $800.

* Daniel Debty pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a 4-car accident. Judge John Snow, Jr. gave Debty credit for a 36-day active sentence that he spent in the Graham County Jail. Debty’s car had hit a stopped car owned by Bobby Odom, bounced off the flashing sign in the middle of the parking lot, crossed the island and hit a third car before coming to a stop. Deputy Richard Lofty received a fractured facial bone as he apprehended Debty, who was charged with a DWI, assault, hit and run, and leaving the scene of an accident. Debty was released into custody of the Georgia State Patrol Board.

* Ten-year-old Mitch Hyde and 12-year-old Ronnie Stewart were seriously injured after being struck by a car operated by Jean Robinson. Robinson told patrolman W.R. Boyles that she was unable to miss the boys, even after veering her car towards the bank to avoid them. The boys – riding double on a bicycle – coasted down the steep driveway from Stewart’s home into the road. Both boys were treated at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville.

* In a preview ahead of the season opener, it was reported that the Black Knights had 15 lettermen returning from a team finishing third place in the Smoky Mountain Conference: Mark Manuel, Lowell Snider, William Collins, Sandy Smith, George Coloneskie, Dale Walsh, Ronnie Waldroup, Tony Odom, Larry Sawyer, Terry Odom, Eddie Rogers, Marty George, Charles George, Kenneth Cody and Ricky Davis. Robbinsville High School coaches consisted of Bob Colvin, who took over in 1966, assisted by John Bandy, Tommy Radford and a newcomer, Burgin Edwards, Jr. They will do their best to produce a lot of winning teams. Update: That last sentence was rather prophetic: Robbinsville won its first outright state title in 1969.
