* A pair of Robbinsville women were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property, after going on an alleged shoplifting spree in Andrews. Doris Matheson Burke and Madgie Postell Barrow were both apprehended by Andrews Police Chief Carl McLean after being found with roughly $500 of goods and clothing in the back of a pickup truck parked in the West End Plaza. Stores allegedly targeted were Goody's, Ingles, Super D and the drug center in Andrews, as well as Wal-Mart and Family Dollar in Murphy.
* The Graham County Bloodmobile exceeded its goal, collecting 58 pints of blood for the largest donation of 1986. Another blood drive was set to be held in December.
Aug. 28, 1980
* Graham County's Marshall McClung was dispatched to assist with fires in Portland, Ore. While on assignment, he was assigned to a volcano fire started by the eruption of Mount St. Helens. The fire covered 35,000 acres – an area three times larger than the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness. Update: Now The Graham Star's historical columnist, McClung has recounted this experience in his bi-weekly contribution, "Bygone Days."
* The annual Graham County Clean-Up resulted in 127 bags of trash being collected from within Lake Santeetlah, divided between the rescue squad (89 bags) and Graham County 4-H (38 bags).
Aug. 28, 1970
* Connie Orr was nominated by the Sweetwater Extension Homemakers Club to appear in the 1970 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. The guidelines for selection include unselfishness, charity, and community recognition. Update: Orr serves as a local commissioner today, and is a staunch advocate for both the county and the region.
* Snowbird Supply Company had plenty of items on sale, ranging from center-cut pork chops for 85 cents a pound to 10% sneakers for the entire family.
