* In an unusual circumstance, 51 counts of unlawful burning, conspiracy and fraud against 10 separate Graham County residents were dismissed when prosecutors could not locate their main witness. Assistant District Attorney Roy Patton dropped the charges due to witness Russell Lee Jones escaping from the Rutherford County jail, which was the fourth time Jones had escaped custody – dating back to a 1971 incident in Cherokee County. Jones was being held in Rutherford County on charges of breaking and entering at the time of his escape.
* Yvonne Hyde was sworn in as the new tax collector by Graham County Clerk of Superior Court O.W. Hooper, Jr. Hyde replaced Joy Long, who resigned from the post.

* Heavy winds, rain and hail left variable levels of damage across the county. Of note, a porch was ripped away from a mobile home; a shed and bundle of lumber were blown into the river; signs for local businesses were toppled; and trees were split in half.
* The "Bicentennial Belles" were announced for the upcoming celebration. * A $1,000 reward was being offered by the Graham County Livestock Producers Association for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone found guilty of stealing or rustling local livestock.
* Bobby Nichols was pictured with a 8 ½-pound largemouth bass that he snagged on Fontana Lake, using a doll fly.
