* The frantic 1986 filing period for local primaries finally closed, with 42 candidates running for office in Graham County. All told, 11 qualified for the board of commissioners race; 12 for the board of education primary; eight for register of deeds; and nine for the office of sheriff.
* The Graham County Board of Education unanimously voted to renamed the hallowed grounds of Big Oaks Stadium to "Modeal Walsh Memorial Stadium." Board member Ira Rogers made the motion, which included Rogers explaining Walsh's "contributions in education and athletics." Update: The stadium is still named after Walsh today, though the playing surface itself has since been christened "Bob Colvin Field."

* A two-day knitting workshop took over the Graham County Courthouse. Sponsored by the Agricultural Extension Service, the course was instructed by associate home economics extension agent Laurie Roberts. Those pictured in the class were Helen Huskie, Ruth Burns, Judy Davis, Marjorie Hyde, Joy Stewart, Burleen Tipton and Florence Erickson.
* Robbinsville native Jerry W. Carringer received his master's degree in divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Over 140 degrees were awarded during the ceremony.

* Robbinsville's John Manuel was afforded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award by the Daniel Boone Council, which was recognized as the highest honor bestowed upon a volunteer scouter. He had been active in scouting leadership for 14 years and was the district chairman for the Nantahala District, which encompassed Cherokee, Clay, Graham and Swain counties. Manuel was pictured with his wife Delores receiving the award at a banquet in Asheville.
* Residents were being asked to cooperate with the use of a new sanitary landfill, which had just opened two months prior on Long Branch Road. The 24-hour center was being covered "as needed" to keep the presence of insects and rodents under control. Individuals were specifically asked to not dump car bodies, dead animals or set fires to the garbage at the site. Update: Sadly, the county has had to tighten the belt on trash disposal in the last year, due to continued mistreatment of convenience centers.
