June 19, 1986

* Deven Raines became the first member to be confirmed at the newly-formed Grace Mountainside Episcopal/Lutheran Church. Raines was confirmed by bishop William Weinhauer. Update: Grace Mountainside still conducts combined services to this day.

* University of Tennessee guard Tony White appeared at the Smoky Mountain Future Stars Basketball Camp, which was held in Robbinsville. White was an All-American selection and at the time of his appearance, led the Southeastern Conference in scoring. 

June 19, 1980

* The inaugural Trail of Tears singing was held in Rome, Ga., and featured a slew of performers from Graham County: The Snowbird Quartet (Ivan Carpenter, Raymond Jackson, Clarence Jackson and Lane Smoker); The Wachacha Family; and Ramona Carpenter.

* Bill Hendon – a Republican candidate for the 11th Congressional District – visited Graham County. Shown meeting with Hendon outside the Graham County Courthouse were Ruth Orr, Virginia Ford, Carol Crisp, Carmel Crisp and Darrell Crisp.

June 19, 1970

* A 33-year-old local man drowned in a boating accident on Lake Santeetlah. According to eyewitness reports, Eugene Moody turned the handle on his boat near the Massey Branch Boat Ramp too quickly. The boat toppled and with Moody near the propeller, he sustained injuries to his head, face and chest. His body was recovered roughly 90 minutes after the accident occurred. Moody was a U.S. Navy veteran.

* A public hearing for the proposed Tellico Plains/Robbinsville Road was held at the Graham County Courthouse. Pictured was Bureau of Public Roads Region 15 Design Engineer Elmer R. Haile, as he showed a map of the planned route. Update: The road later opened in 1996, as the Cherohala Skyway.
