* Stanley Furniture announced the opening of a furniture factory-outlet store. The old Dale Electronics building on Fort Hill was the site. All furniture pieces were discontinued, damaged or scratched items. The items came to Robbinsville from five Stanley locations: Stanleytown and Waynesboro, Va., plus West End, Lexington and Robbinsville plants in North Carolina.
* The new Graham County Recycling Center opened at the old Bemis property, just past Stanley Furniture. The facility was open from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. – noon Saturdays. Aluminum, cardboard, glass, plastics, newspapers and scrap metal were collected.

* Rick Davis was approved as assistant superintendent/curriculum coordinator, based upon the recommendation of superintendent Lloyd Crisp. A 1971 graduate of Robbinsville High School, Davis was serving as principal of Stecoah High School, where he had been a science teacher for nine years until taking the position as principal in 1984. Rick was married to Sara Rogers Davis and had a 3-year-old son, Benjamin. Update: Ben is a science teacher for Graham County Schools today.
* Stecoah High School graduation exercises were conducted in the school auditorium, with an all-male class of nine. Roger Millsaps, pastor of Tuskeegee Baptist Church, delivered the baccalaureate sermon. Millsaps encouraged the graduating seniors to seek God’s will for their lives. The inaugural Distinguished Teacher Award was given to Jack Brooms. The seniors were recognized by principal Rick Davis, who commended them on the support shown to him.

* Two new state highway patrolmen had been assigned to Graham County. They were William Gardner – a native of Haywood County – and Harold Robertson, originally from Rockingham County. Both men had graduated in April from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol 60th Basic School in Raleigh.
* As a part of the Graham County Bicentennial Program, a countywide musical festival was an all-county affair during the day, and at night continued with a street dance in Glyn Roger’s Jeep lot. Residents could expect weekly news bulletins concerning the details of this event in The Graham Star.
