* Following the abrupt resignation of school board member Cecil Rogers, Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Howard Rogers called for a special committee meeting to discuss the vacancy. The issue? He scheduled it for a Monday at 10 a.m., which interfered with many who were working. Other members of the committee later signed a letter stating they would not meet “without undue hardship” and called for the meeting to be moved to 7 p.m.
March 13, 1980
* County resident James R. Sharpe was named the Most Outstanding Farm Bureau Agency Manager in North Carolina for 1979. Sharpe was also recognized for being the top producer in life protection in the state. He sold a total of $4,300,646 in 1979, between both fire and casualty insurance, as well as life insurance. Sharpe received his honors at a conference in Charlotte.
March 13, 1970
* The Graham County Republican Women met for a historic dinner at Joyce Kilmer Restaurant and formed a Graham County Women’s Club. The new organization was set to be operated under the National Federation of Republican Women and as a member of the North Carolina Federation of Republican Women. Initial officers elected were Mrs. Bryce Holder, president; Mrs. Dewey Eller, vice president; Mrs. Earnest Collins, secretary; and Mrs. Essie Carringer, treasurer. Update: The civic club is still active today, 55 years after its formation.
