* Graham County Democrat Chairman Howard Rogers had yet to call an executive meeting at a time deemed appropriate by the party's committee, to discuss the vacancy left by Cecil Rogers' abrupt resignation from the board of education. Howard had attempted to assemble a 10 a.m., meeting, but the committee issued a letter requesting a 7 p.m., gathering instead. No meeting had been held and the party only had 30 days from the date of Cecil's resignation before the school board could simply appoint a replacement.

* Robbinsville hoopsters were recognized as part of the annual All-Smoky Mountain Conference list. April Holder averaged 16.7 points per game and 15.8 rebounds per game for the Lady Knights, while Darrin Self recorded an average of 11 PPG and eight RPG. Honorable mentions for the girls were Ella Mae Teesateskie (11.7 PPG) and Tracy Teesateskie (10.5 PPG); while Tom Barlow (13.5 PPG) was an Honorable Mention for the Black Knights.

* The "missing link" in a planned four-lane highway between Andrews and Almond was shown preferential treatment by state officials to roll through the Snowbird Mountains of Graham County. Coming with an estimated price tag of $200 million, over half the amount along the 27-mile addition was earmarked for the construction of two tunnels: one at Tatham Gap (which would be a mile long) and one at Stecoah Gap. Update: As we all know, this is the long-planned "Corridor K," which did not stick to the plan mapped out here and finally broke ground with major modifications Oct. 3, 2022.

* Second-grade students at Robbinsville Elementary School had delved into a challenge to read 100 books. Those recognized were Sheila Rattler, Ginger Hyde, Shane Garland, Lisa Simpson, Stephanie Queen, Karl Shook, Kelly Snider, Jennifer Jenkins, Carol Cook, Jamie Brooks, Tracey Saunooke, Crystal Payne, Heather Crawford, Beth Carver and Christina Millsaps. A $5 prize was up for grabs for the students who read the most books by May 16.
