* Roy Dale Peterson was killed in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 129 in Graham County. The 40-year-old Peterson was traveling northbound when he lost control of his 1977 Chevrolet pickup, crossing the center line and colliding with a Builders Supply and Ready Mix cement truck from Andrews. Peterson died upon impact, according to highway patrol officer Bob DeBruhl. The driver of the cement truck, Andrews resident Douglas Ray Derreberry, was treated and released from Mountain Park Medical Center in Andrews. Peterson was the brother of Graham County Sheriff A.J. Peterson.
* Bond was set at $30,000 for Terry Lane Buchanan, a county resident accused of first-degree sexual offense involving a two-year-old girl. District Court Judge Danny Davis also fined Buchanan $20 plus court costs and $35 restitution for an incident at Mountain Park Medical Center, which occurred the night the alleged victim was brought in for treatment and Buchanan broke a window at the facility.

* Reg Wilcox and Charles Rogers were each gifted white canes by Lions Club President Marshall McClung, as well as members Wayne McClung and Adam Green. State law dictated that anyone carrying a white cane had the right-of-way while crossing a street and all traffic must stop to allow the pedestrian to safely navigate.
* Robbinsville Elementary School students participated in a statewide contest, titled "Better Speech and Hearing." Fourth-grade pupil J.R. Orr's poster, "Hearing Aids: Save your Ears for Years and Years," was the overall winner. Sixth-grader Crystal Patterson placed second, with her poster "Monkeying with your Ears may Hinder your Future Years." Third place was afforded to fourth grader Jackie Stiles, for "Treasure Your Ears," while another fourth-grade student, Miriam Adams, claimed fourth place with her submission, "Plug your Ears if you Want Them for Later Years."
March 20, 1970
* Election night in 1970 promised to be a packed affair at the local level, as 47 candidates qualified for various races in Graham County. On the ballot were the office of sheriff, clerk of court, register of deeds, accountant, tax supervisor, coroner, commissioner and the board of education.
* Miss Felicia Farr, 2, was named The Star's Easter Girl for 1970. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verlie Farr, Felicia received an early visit from the Easter Bunny as her present.
