March 6, 1986

* School board member Cecil Rogers (D) resigned, though no reason was given. Superintendent Lowell Crisp was tasked with writing a letter to the Democrat Executive Committee, in light of the vacancy.

* The Graham County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the $5,500 purchase of a used patrol car for the sheriff's office. The vehicle replaced one that had been wrecked on an icy road and came with 60,000 miles on the body.

* Resodding was needed at Big Oaks Stadium, as the field had became compacted. The suggestion of mixing 5-6 inches of sand into the dirt present at the field was made, as was building a concession stand and bathrooms. Money for each of the projects was limited, as noted by the Graham County Board of Education.

* A Culberson woman was killed in an early-morning crash by a Robbinsville man driving a Bemis Lumber Company truck. Raymond Doyle Hyde, 30, was driving west on U.S. 19 in Andrews when he struck a 1965 Ford, which had skidded out-of-control while being operated by 24-year-old Rachel Lou Shields. Shields was on her way to work as a nurse at District Memorial Hospital in Andrews when the fatal wreck occurred. Hyde was not charged.

* Burl Adkins, 40, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Adkins' wife and two children were not home at the time of the incident. An investigation could find no motive for the suicide.
