* A one-year anniversary celebration was held for the Graham County Public Library, which opened April 21, 1985. At the time, the librarian was Lorraine Briggs; she was assisted by Sue Phillips and Evelyn Grindstaff. Agnes Adams rounded out the staff on-hand. Update: The library remains in the same building and location to this day, at 80 Knight St., in Robbinsville.

* According to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission, the county's unemployment rate was the highest in the state. Peaking at 43 percent in January 1986 – largely due to the closing of United Globe – the rate dropped to 32.7 in February, after Stanley Furniture moved into the former home of United Globe and hired around 300 employees. By March, the local unemployment rate was 30.2.

* A groundbreaking was held for a new retirement home in Graham County. Dubbed "Wildwood," the site was on 7 ½ acres off Old Tallulah Road and when completed, the facility was set to hold four, 12-bed buildings. Update: Today, Graham Healthcare & Rehabilitation off Snowbird Road is the only retirement facility left in the county.

* The Graham County Rescue Squad's annual Ramp Festival raised $1,500 for the organization. Update: Despite its popularity, the festival has been defunct for several years.

* Mack Allen was killed in Campobello, S.C., after someone opened fire on the 33-year-old Robbinsville native in the front yard of his father-in-law. Three Campobello men were being held in custody in connection with the shooting: one had admitted to the shooting, while the other two were material witnesses. The suspect was not named in The Star's report.

* The Snowbird Trio was set to appear as part of the Tommy Scott Country Caravan and Wild West Stage Show's television appearance on Party Line, which was taped in Atlanta. The trio was comprised of a former Robbinsville couple, Bill and Wilma Millsaps, as well as Tennessee resident Chuck Housley.
