May 22, 1986

* Gregory D. Barker graduated from the U.S. Air Force's inventory management course at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. A 1985 graduate of Robbinsville High, Barker was the son of Fed and Wanda Barker.

* The Graham County Extension Office's Advisory Leadership Committee recognized its new officers: Patsy Ingram, vice chair; R.L. Crisp, secretary; and Jean Taylor, chair.

May 22, 1980

* Modeal Walsh was named president of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Walsh had served on the association's board of directors for five years and was the vice president during the previous calendar. His appointment was for one year. Update: Robbinsville's football stadium is named in honor of Walsh.

* The Northwestern Bank's inaugural fishing tournament was significantly impacted by heavy rainfall. Only six teams reported for the event on Fontana Lake, with Berry Paul Jenkins reeling in a 3 ½-pound largemouth bass to win a new fishing rod and reel.

May 22, 1970

* Ahead of graduation, the top students from each of the county's three high schools were recognized. Ruth Shope was the valedictorian of Mountain View High, while Rena Shope was the salutatorian and Helen Millsaps was the orator. At Robbinsville High, honor students were Dale Walsh, Cecil Patterson, Carolyn Lloyd, Larry Adams, Kaye Phillips, Joey Ward, Diane Rogers Colvard, Charles George, Robbie George and David Jenkins. Stecoah High's Beth Carringer was the valedictorian and Hank Holder was the salutatorian. Marie Nichols and Clara Pilkington were Stecoah's other honor graduates.

* Robbinsville defeated Cherokee 9-4 on its home field. Lowell Snider scored two runs in the victory, while Charles George was 2-for-2 with a double. Mark Manuel was the winning pitcher.
